The Contribution of Enterprise Systems

* 1. What are enterprise systems? Provide examples of organizational functions supported by enterprise systems.

* An enterprise system is defined in chapter 8: Achieving Operational Excellence and Customer Intimacy: Enterprise Applications as being “a set of integrated software modules and central database that enables data to be shared by many different business processes and functional areas throughout the enterprise.” Some examples of organizational functions supported by enterprise systems, according to the table 8.1 Business Processes Supported by Enterprise Systems are financial and accounting processes, human resource processes, manufacturing and production processes and sales and marketing processes. Some examples of these processes are general ledger, cash management, time accounting, payroll, inventory management, shipping, order processing and credit are just a few out of many. However, enterprise systems does not support the way organizations do business. The system allows companies to rewrite software to support the way certain businesses processes work. In chapter 8 Part III: Key System Applications for the Digital Age states that- “If companies want to reap the maximum benefits from enterprise software, they must change the way they work to conform to the business processes in the software.”
