Self Esteem is a term used to describe how a person views themselves. “It is specifically how much value a person places on him or herself”. (Johnston) Self-esteem is also affected by physical ill-health, negative life events or even a general sense of lack of control. Very poor self-esteem can be linked to a traumatic childhood experience, neglect or physical, sexual, or emotional abuse.

A person with borderline personality disorder has very low self-esteem... “: Self-esteem is significant to a person with borderline personality disorder as it can greatly impact issues with anger, personal goals and relationships. What self-esteem does is enable a person to set goals and try to attain them. It also helps to give a person a sense of worthiness. A person how has a long term low self-esteem issue generally sees the world and other people as hostile and consider themselves as a victim... Once a person can raise their self-esteem they can help themselves to find a better way of life and not live with any psychological disorder such as borderline personality disorder.

There are several ways for one to begin to build their esteem to a level where they can think highly of themselves. One can think positively about themselves and remind themselves that despite any problems they may have, they are still a unique, special and valuable person. A person can also pay special attention to their personal hygiene. Get a new hair style, be sure that their nails are trimmed and cleaned. And be sure that their teeth are cleaned and flossed.
