Current Events in Business Research

Business research process entails studying all aspects of a company, its customers and the market, then using that information to make sound business decisions. I work at the Veterans hospital, one of the many decision making I faced was the bed turnover time. From the time a patient was admitted in the ER to the time he/she is stabilized and transferred to the inpatient ward was 6 hours three months ago.

Our business research team got involved and planned to reduce the patient discharge time from ER to inpatient ward from 6 hours to 2 hours. It took them to perform some research planning, acquire data, analyze the data and disseminate insight and implement the solution. They planned by contacting all the departments that were involved in transfer and providing adequate patient care for the inpatient units as well as the Emergency room. They acquired data from the time patient checked in to the ER to the time patients was transferred and settled in the inpatient unit by observation or gimbo walks. They transcribed the collected data to create charts and analyzed the data to present to the executive committee.

The biggest downfall was the communication breakdown between the housekeeping, nursing station and the ER. The housekeeper might have already cleaned the bed but the nursing station wasn’t informed or the ER wasn’t informed within timely manner for the patient to be able to transfer over.

They implemented an automated paging system for the staff at various level to send pages as the process was completed at their level to increase efficiency in providing better care to the patient and also increase and provide faster care to the other incoming patients in the waiting room.
