Backbone Network (BN) – A large network to which many networks within an organization are connected.

Circuit – The path over which the voice, data, or image transmissions travel.

Client – The input-output hardware device at the user’s end of a communication circuit.

Internet Service Provider (ISP) – ISPs offer connections to the Internet.

Federal Communications Commission (FCC) – A board of seven commissioners appointed by the U.S president under the Communication Act of 1934, having the power to regulate all interstate and foreign electrical communications systems originating in the United States.

Local Area Network – A network that is located in a small geographic area, such as an office, a building, a complex of buildings, and whose communication technology provides a high bandwidth, low-cost medium to which many nodes can be connected.

Local Exchange Carrier – The local telephone company.

Metropolitan Area Network – A network that usually covers a citywide area.
