The horrors of Shark finning

Sadly, shark fining is widespread, unmanaged and unmonitored. Sharks have been around for millions of years, but because of some events that are currently happening, the shark population is disappearing. The practice of shark fining is inhumane which is causing the shark population around the globe reducing at an alarming rate and is threatening the stability of our ocean ecosystems mainly for shark fins. Is it really worth it?

Shark finning is one of the worst forms of animal cruelty and it’s happening all around the world. Fishermen long line the sharks onto their boat where they cut off the fins off the animals while they’re still alive and dump their bodies back into the ocean where the sharks drown and bleed to death. . How would you like it if someone cut off your limbs and threw you on the street? Not only is this practise cruel, but it also wasteful as only 5% of the sharks body is used. More than 100 million sharks are killed this way, all for the unnecessary luxury of a bowl of shark fin soup. Also a status symbol in the Asian countries, its cartilage is used for its alleged therapeutic value, which has never been proved scientifically. Keep in mind that these fins are simply dried cartilage, and they are tasteless. This soup is enhanced with meats like beef or chicken and the cartilage gives the soup a jellied texture. Many Marine biologist reports that sharks are in rapid decline due to over-fishing and some sharks species have decreased by 99% such as Angular angel shark and the Oceanic Whitetip shark over the last 50 years. A couple weeks ago I was introduced by the documentary ‘Shark Water’ which was really the first time anyone had publicly fought against shark hunting industry and the threat of extinction, it completely shocked me and since then I’ve been more aware of the consequences finning can do.
