CHAPTER-1
INTRODUCTION TO MANAGEMENT
Management has been defined in different ways, most definitions of the word ‘MANAGEMENT ‘emphasis one common idea:-
It concerns with the accomplishment of objectives through the efforts of people performing certain functions.
LET’S LOOK INTO SOME OF THESE DEFINITIONS:-
* FREEDERICK WINSLOW TAYLOR:-
“Management is knowing exactly what you want men to do and then seeing that they do it in the best and cheapest way “
* PER DRUCKER :-
“Management is a multi-purpose organ that manages a business, manages managers and manages workers and work”
* GEORGE TERRY :-
“Management is a distinct process consisting of planning, organizing, actuating, and controlling performance to determine and accomplish the objectives by the use of people and resources
* KOONTZ :-
“Management is the art of getting things done through and with people in formally organized groups “
* HENERY FAYOL :-
“To manage is to forecast, to plan, to organize, to command, to coordinate and to
Control”
CHARACTERSTICS OF MANAGEMENT :
Various interpretations of management emphasis 3 things:
* Management is a process and involves a series of continues and related activities.
* It tries to concentrate on reaching organizational goals.
* And it reaches these goals by working with and through other people and other organizational resources.
The important features which reveals the nature of management may be started thus:-
* INTANGIBLE- As pointed out by Terry management is intangible. It can’t be seen , it is an unseen force however its presence can be felt in the form of production, sales and profit.
* GOAL OREINTED –Management seeks to achieve goals these goals may be economic or non-economic. In a business organization ,the primary goal is to produce and distribute goods with a view to earn profit, In a service organization the goal might be customer service e.g.- NGO’s
