Checkpoint: Courtroom Players Response
Ian Garcia
What is considered to be a courtroom work group?
A courtroom work group is best described as the jury of the court that “work” together to determine whether or not a criminal will be prosecuted.
How does this courtroom work group interact on a daily basis?
A courtroom work group interacts on a daily basis by again working together on a criminal court case, which can take from a couple weeks to up to a year. During that time, the courtroom work group works their best to come up with a decision that they all agree on.
What is the role of the prosecutor?
The role of the prosecutor is to prove with substantial evidence that a person being charged has committed the crime that they are being charged of.
How does a prosecutor determine which cases to pursue?
A prosecutor determines the cases to pursue by determining if a certain case has enough evidence to be carried out, as well as enough evidence to charge the person(s) being committed of the crime.
What would happen if the criteria for taking a case were more, or less, stringent?
If taking a case was more or less stringent, I think that there would be more prosecutors looking to come up by charging more people with crimes. Of course it makes sense for the prosecutor to have a substantial amount of information before they are able to go on with the case, but if this was not a requirement or were less strict, more people could be charged with crimes that they may have not even committed.
What changes to the courtroom work group would you recommend?
One change I would make to the courtroom work group is their interaction with the prosecution. It only makes sense that if they are working amongst themselves on a case, they could use all of the help that they could when it comes to charging someone with a crime.
