DEPRESSION

When most people think of the word depression they think of feeling sad or feeling down. For example, If they do poorly on their history exam, they may feel disappointed and tell their friends, "I'm, depressed. I didn't do well on my history test yesterday." While it may be true, they may feel depressed about doing poorly on your exam, chances are their depression isn't overwhelming to a point where your daily functioning is hampered.

Depression is a mood disorder. It is and illness that immerses its sufferers in a world of self-blame, confusion, and hopelessness. It is an illness of the mind and the body. The major element of depression is a loss of interest in activities in which they previously found enjoyable.

Depression can affect a person in a couple of different ways and have many biopsychosocial factors. It can affect a person's mood or attitude and it can affect them physically. Physically, depression can cause a person to become sluggish, and my affect their speech causing them to speak slow. A person's motor skills may also become affected causing them to delayed. Their memory may also be affected.

A person with depression may also pace, become very aggressive or hostile, lose their sense of humor and seldom smile. They are often tired due to either getting too much sleep or not enough sleep. Depression can affect one's life to the point of becoming absent from work or school due to the person not having enough energy or they may lack the motivation to get out of bed.

Many describe the feeling of depression as having a heavy burden or a heavy weight on their back. This weight is often unexplainable and is an accumulation of stress. The feeling of being inadequate may lead a depressive to withdraw from family and friends. However, some suffering with depression may become over dependent on those around them. For some, it may seem that nothing can or will go right nor will anything improve.
