In this situation it was important to go through the critical thinking process because if the client would have been questioned too early then he would have had time to hide or throw away his map. The clients are very sneaky and just as staff is supposed to be watching them they are also watching staff’s every movement. The use of critical thinking in this instance also helped Sheena to better observe the male client’s in the facility while at play. She was also able to recognize characteristics of when clients are planning things that may cause him to have to be removed from the facility. The critical thinking process allowed Sheena along with other staff to correctly validate the suspicions of whether or not the client was actually going to AWOL. She was also able to be fair-minded and not accuse anyone of something that they did not do. According to Vincent Ruggiero, “critical thinkers recognize that extreme views whether conservative or liberal are seldom correct, so they avoid them, practice fair-mindedness, and seek a balanced view (2001).”

One benefit of critical thinking in this situation allowed upper management to see how alert and effectively observing each one of the clients as instructed. Keeping the client from escaping the facility also helped the company to retain money. Once a client is discharged or leaves the facility payment is automatically stopped. Our company is already losing money and to it could not afford to unnecessarily lose clientele. The organization also instilled more trust in Sheena recognizing that she has the best interest of job and clients in mind when doing her job. Schwarze & Lape state that, “Critical thinkers are less likely to fall for scams or tricks because they approach everything with a healthy amount of skepticism (2001).”
