Digital Citizenship is an ever growing concept in today’s increasingly technologically advanced world. Digital citizenship is the theory, or more accurately idea that students, especially children should be properly instructed on correctly using technology, such as the internet and the many tools the internet provides. More and more prevalent in today’s world is the fact that students as well as adults are misusing and very well abusing the tools provided to them, and Digital Citizenship as a concept can prepare these misguided people of for a fully integrated technological world. The issue isn’t about what a person knows and doesn’t; the issue is how a person uses what they do know, appropriately or not, and Digital Citizenship provides the proper knowledge of what exactly is an appropriate usage of today’s technology, within it’s Nine Elements of Digital Citizenship. As a society I believe that these Nine Elements provide a proper guideline for not just thriving, but simply surviving the day to day hazards of technology misuse, though proper communication, and collaboration with our “fellow travelers” of the formerly called “Information Super-Highway”.

The first element is Digital Access. This is the foundation of Digital Citizenship. As all citizens are granted the right of being “born free”, Digital Citizenship advocates the free access to all information. Restriction and exclusion has been a hot point throughout history, with these concepts becoming the foundation for nearly every major point in any society’s history. As restriction and exclusion have prevented a people from growing as a society, so goes the same in the digital world: digital restriction prevents the growth of users in an increasingly electronic society. Technology should be accessible to all, no matter who the person is, or from where they hail. To become productive citizens, this idea must be addressed and committed to.
