“Everything is an Argument” examines elements of arguments and how they can be beneficial in making the audience understand the writer’s point. The authors begin by giving us two examples from two different country’s elections. It is noted that the sight of their ink stained fingers showing proof of voting could insight an argument. With this it is stated that anything can actually insight an argument, from the written word to statements made, the act of praying, even clothing that is worn. Everything a person does can represent who they are and what their values are and this in its self can provoke an argument. Anything that can “express a point of view” can be considered a trigger. Although arguments debate a topic not all arguments are “aimed at winning” or changing a person’s views. The term Rogerian argument is based on a non-intimidating manner to seek mutual agreements and gain “trust” in those whom did not agree. Therefore, when constructing an argument it is better to keep an open mind and not focus on the win.

There are many different purposes for arguing including to inform, convince, persuade, explore, to make decisions, for academia, and to meditate or pray. To inform is to educate the reader in something they may not already know. A convincing argument should have evidence to support its subject. The writer is not trying to change the reader’s opinion on a pre-established point of view; they merely present the details in an undoubted manner. Persuasive arguments on the other hand are written to provoke action. Evidence is repeated throughout a document to prove a point and to encourage the reader to change his or her point of view. Arguments to explore can be “deeply personal, they are written to reflect on or address an issue. The writer or the reader feels there is a problem that needs solved.
