Goal of the offering

The goal of this educational offering is to educate bedside nurses on the importance of DVT identification, prevention, and treatment in their practice. Bedside nurses play a pivotal role in the identification of patients at risk for development of a DVT. After attending this educational offering, the bedside nurse will be able to use the preventative techniques presented to decrease the incidence of DVT formation. Also, this offering will inform the bedside nurse of the most recent treatment modalities found in the literature. Just as the title states, the goal of this offering is to teach bedside nurses how to identify, prevent, and treat DVT.

Theory and educational principles used with rationale

The target audience of this presentation is bedside nurses who are all assumed to be adults with varying degrees of higher education. Howard Gardner’s theory of Multiple Intelligence guided the formation of this educational offering. Individuals use different forms of Intelligence to learn new information and conceptualize ideas (McKenzie, 1999). Utilizing graphics in the PowerPoint presentation to show the process of DVT formation appeals to the learner in the Visual/Spatial domain. The graphics are intended to show the pathophysiology of DVT in a visual format for those learners possessing Visual/Spatial Intelligence. Listing medications used in the treatment of DVT, and explaining the prescriptive rationale for each medication appeals to the learners’ Verbal/Linguistic Intelligence. Allowing for a question and answer series at the end of the presentation allows audience members to learn through collaboration with others thus utilizing their Interpersonal Intelligence.
