External Environmental Scan

In 1986 Ogeechee Technical Institute was established by the Georgia General Assembly as a two-year Technical Institute. In 2000 the name was changed to Ogeechee Technical College (Ogeechee Technical College, 2012). The purpose of this college is to provide quality education and service to individuals, business, and industry. Environmental Scanning is the monitoring of organizations external and internal environments that detects early signs threats and opportunities that may influence present and future plans (Environmental Scanning, 2012). Ogeechee Technical College will be able to explore environmental factors in the remote, industry, and external operating environment. The scan will also look at the internal strengths and weaknesses of Ogeechee Technical College. Finally the study will look at the college’s competitive position and possibilities.

Remote Environment

Remote environment factors are factors beyond the operational situation; these factors are economic, social, political, technological, and ecological factors (Pearce & Robinson, 2011, pg. 81). The factor that affects the college the most is the economic factor. An example of this is that when the economic downturn began, it hurt a large amount of businesses. Although plants and businesses were closing, however, this was a good thing for Ogeechee Technical College. The college began to have record enrollment. The economic downturn was good factor for the college. Ogeechee Technical College experienced record enrollment which meant more classes could be offered and more faculty and staff could be hired. Record enrollment occurred because as those individuals were out of work they would come to school to learn a new trade.

Industry Environment
