Description of Condition

Amenorrhea is a condition where there is an absence of menstruation which can either occur at the onset of puberty or in the later years of life (Tamparo & Lewis, 2005; “Amenorrhea”; “Amenorrhea”, 2006). There are two types of amenorrhea; primary and secondary. Primary amenorrhea occurs when an adolescent has never had a menstrual period by the age of sixteen (Tamparo & Lewis, 2005; “Amenorrhea”; “Amenorrhea”, 2006). Secondary amenorrhea occurs later in life and happens when a woman who previously has experienced monthly menstruation but the regular cycle stops for at least a six month interval (Tamparo & Lewis, 2005; “Amenorrhea”).

Characteristics of the Condition

If an adolescent has not menstruated by the age of sixteen she should be checked by a physician to seek the cause primary amenorrhea (Tamparo & Lewis, 2005; “Amenorrhea”; “Amenorrhea”, 2006). In adults experiencing secondary amenorrhea they should seek medical attention if they are experiencing irregular menstruation and then a complete absence of menstruation (Tamparo & Lewis, 2005; “Amenorrhea”).

Treatment Options

Treatment for amenorrhea depends on the cause (Tamparo & Lewis, 2005; “Amenorrhea”; “Amenorrhea”, 2006). Primary amenorrhea caused by defects such as cysts or tumors that are present at birth may require surgery to fix the defect and often hormone therapy to replace the hormones the body usually produces to cause the menstruation cycle (Tamparo & Lewis, 2005; “Amenorrhea”; “Amenorrhea”, 2006). For secondary amenorrhea birth control pills may be given to boost the ability to ovulate once a month. In addition the woman’s diet may need an increase of caloric and fat intake to help promote the cycle to begin (Tamparo & Lewis, 2005; “Amenorrhea”; “Amenorrhea”, 2006).
