Street Gangs

Intro/Thesis

Street gangs will always exist because of their influence to their communities and surrounding areas in which they live in. Even though thesegangs provide their members with things for example money, power, and respect. Gang memberscan end up in jail, prison or worse, death. At an early age gang memberssometimes do not realize this until it is too late. Gangs can be found in all parts of America for example in suburbs, inner cities and on the internet. Gangs always find new ways to recruit members into their gang.

Youth

The reason why street gangs will always exist is because of their mass influence to their communities and surrounding areas they live in. According to Howell, J. (2008), The National Youth Gang Survey (NYGS) reported the seriousness of gang problems in areas with large populations. Most youths that join gangs have already been involved in delinquency and drug use. Once in the gang, they are quite likely to become more actively involved in delinquency, drug use. They are at greater risk of arrest, juvenile court referral, detention, confinement in a juvenile correctional facility, and, later, imprisonment. The involvement of a being in a gang will change a youth’s life dramatically.

Environment

Prison:

According to gang investigators prison gangs are the most organized gangs. Prison gangs developed in the 1940’s in California, Texas and Illinois. They monitor and dictate how they behave and treat each other and even if they do a serious violation they have been known to kill their own. Since these gangs have became so sophisticated authorities have to do the same. Law enforcement learns a lot of information that’s prison.
