Define Marketing
The heart of a successful business lies in marketing. Marketing is a key element of any business. Understanding what marketing means to a business may determine the difference in success and failure for the business. To gain a better understanding of marketing, this paper will provide three definitions of marketing. It will also explain the importance of marketing in organizational success along with examples to support the explanation.
Definitions of Marketing
Marketing covers many aspects of a business. Personally, marketing is when an organization or individual promotes a product or service through any activity that retains the attention of the business’ existing market and gains the attention of potential markets. Therefore, a business must research and plan properly. Organizations put much work into marketing to reach success.
Many aspects of a business rely upon successful marketing. The general marketing canopy covers areas such as sales, promoting, advertising, and public relations. However, according to Small Business Chron (2012), “Marketing is a process by which a product or service is introduced and promoted to potential customers” (para. 1). The definition vaguely describes marketing. Readers would assume that marketing pertains to mainly advertising.
According to McCarthy, P. (2009), “Marketing by definition is the process of planning and executing the conception, pricing, promotion, and distribution of ideas, goods, services, organizations, and events to create exchanges that satisfy individual and organizational objectives” (para. 1).
