Special Issues: Internet Fraud

We all can agree that the internet has changed the way we live whether it’s positive or negative. Positively it changes how we learn, entertain ourselves, and share memories but with the good always comes the bad. Negatively many of our experiences that we have make the internet valuable in our daily lives that require us to share information that potentially turn into risks and to allow other people an opportunity to put us at risk for their own benefit. An example of this is internet fraud which refers to any type of fraud scheme that uses one or more online services to present fraudulent transactions; or to transmit proceeds of fraud to financial institution or to others connected with the scheme. This can take place in chat rooms, email, or websites.

Even though they scams have been around for awhile its worse now then it ever was. Because of the current recession and high unemployment rate criminals are trying to work overtime on the unemployed. This goes with the identity theft and get rich quick schemes.

These companies can’t be located because they move from place to place and most of them lead to identity theft of your personal information. We are the victims who are preyed on by these criminals because if you believe what they are saying and cash one of the checks then you will be going to jail. No one wants to go to jail if they don’t have to. The Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) conducted a consistence of the different perpetrators. 77.4% of the perpetrators was male and 50% resided in California, New York, Texas, Florida, District of Columbia, and Washington. 66.1% are from the United States while the rest were located in the United Kingdom.
