In the essay I will first define the EU citizenship and examine “the notion” of European citizenship. Then I will examine and present more accurately the vosman case and identify the implication of the Bosman case with the EU citizenship. After that I will introduce the consequences of the vosman case correlating with EU citizenship and the impact of it on the European population. The other aim of this essay is to examine the “point at issue” which came out with the vosman case and to determine the divulgation and popularization of it.

European citizenship officially appeared in 1992 with the Treaty of Maastricht; previous attempts were made to erect a citizenship at the European level. The objectives of introducing the European citizenship were as different as: enhancing the legitimacy of the European integration, consolidating the free movement of persons within the EU, contributing to the development of a political Europe. “Since the treaty of Maastricht, the concept of European citizenship is enshrined in the Treaty establishing the European Community (Articles 17- 22 and 255). It has evolved as the European integration moved on as creating an ever closer Union among the peoples of Europe became the first aim of the European Union to be mentioned in the EU Treaties completed with the objective of strengthening the protection of the rights and interests of the nationals of its Member States through the introduction of a citizenship of the Union.The Treaty of Amsterdam, which entered into force on 1rst May 1999, extended citizens rights/obligations by introducing a clause allowing EU institutions to take measures against discrimination on the grounds of sex, racial or ethnic origin, religion or belief, disability, age or sexual orientation to the Treaty.” (European Union citizenship, a wide set of rights and obligations, 2006)
