9/23/12 MIS-589-19217 CHAPTER 4 Mini case 1

I. Smith, Smith, Smith, and Smith

Smith, Smith, Smith, and Smith are a regional accounting firm that is putting up a new headquarters building. The building will have a backbone network that connects eight LANs (two on each floor). The company is very concerned with network errors. What advice would you give regarding the design of the building and network cable planning that would help reduce network errors?

Two LAN on each floor connecting to backbone network is being used to segment the network circuit which allows better usage of circuit without having to use expensive very high capacity cable.

Building design must include network cable planning to avoid errors caused by source other than human error. Shielding (protecting wires by covering them with an insulating coating) is one of the best ways to prevent impulse noise, cross-talk, and intermodulation noise.

Proper electrical and network cabling blueprint plan for the building should be designed so that network cables are not too close to power cables and electrical devices.

This can be prevented by proper planning in terms of placement of repeaters (Switches or Hubs). Since Switches will be needed anyway for multiple devices to communicate on shared circuit, these should be placed at calculated distances based on type of cable used to prevent attenuation.

High quality media with enough capacity must be used as the cost of upgrade is significantly higher than cost incurred in using quality material at design phase of new building. To keep cost in control use 100Base-T cable and Switches that has one 1000Base-F port.

Most network errors, occur during transmission, and are controlled by the network hardware and software. There are two categories of network errors: corrupted data (data that have been changed) and lost data.

There are many techniques to prevent errors, by using different types of wires and cables are available with different amounts of...
