Walmart is an American multinational retailer corporation that runs chains of large discount department stores and warehouse stores. It is the biggest private employer in the world with over two million employees, and is the largest retailer in the world. Walmart operates retail stores in various formats around the world and is committed to saving people money so they can live better and more comfortable. Walmart earns the trust of their customers every day by providing a broad assortment of quality merchandise and services at everyday low prices, while fostering a culture that rewards and embraces mutual respect, integrity, and diversity. Walmart's mission is “Saving people money to help them live better. This was the goal that Sam Walton envisioned when he opened the doors to the first Walmart. This focus drives everything we do at Walmart, and for the millions of customers who shop in our stores around the world each week, it means they can trust that our brand means we have everyday low prices” (Walmart Annual Report). The company is controlled by the Walton family, which owns 48% stake in Walmart. The company was founded by Sam Walton in 1962, incorporated on October 31, 1969, and publicly traded on the New York Stock Exchange in 1972. It is headquartered in Bentonville, Arkansas. In the 1980s, Walmart continued to grow rapidly, and by its 25th anniversary in 1987 there were 1,198 stores with sales of $15.9 billion and 200,000 associates. In 1988, the first Walmart Supercenter opened in Washington, Missouri. This allowed Walmart to sell groceries and other personal items people needed. Walmart pushes technology, finance and logistics to innovate, turn around and supply what customers need more intuitively and more efficiently (Walmart Careers). With these advancements Walmart will soon become the largest discount retail store.
