“If music be the food of love, play on…” (Shakespeare, 2012). Music has been a very big part of my life and so from a very young age this quote has been what I live by.

My mom, who is no longer with us was always my teacher, she sang to me and I was told that I imitated her very well and that I added my own style, flare and more melody to the singing. Beginning at a very tender age, three and a half or four I was singing in Nursery School, temples and other Hindu religious gatherings. I sang nursery rhymes in school and at home and to my siblings as I rock them in a hammock to put them to sleep or simply to calm them down. “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star, How I Wonder What You Are” was and continues to be one of my favorite childhood songs that impacted me positively. My greatest inspiration was my mom who was very encouraging and taught me many songs both in Hindi and English languages. Unfortunately, I never had the opportunity to attend any music classes as they were either not offered in the schools I attended or my parents could not afford the tuition for private schools. However, my love for music is so great that I will listen to a song and learn the lyrics and then sing it.

I continued to sing Hindi religious songs similar or equivalent to Gospel singing and was discovered by my “Guru” who is a brilliant and very talented priest and through him I was given many opportunities to perform in national events. In my adolescent years I spent my weekends and some evening working with very skilled and talented musicians who played the drums (Tabla and Dholak), keyboard (Harmonium) and the mandolin.
