I grew up watching Star Trek and considered myself a young Star Trek fan or ‘Trekkie.’ Through the years, I grew out of that stage - some Trekkies have not. Star trek has evolved into a huge popular culture icon. Trekkies are found around the world! The first episode of Star Trek, the original series, was aired in 1966. The series filmed in color at a time when color television was not popular. The Star Trek movie that I am reviewing is a science fiction film directed by J.J. Abrams in 2009. This movie expands on the historical versions of the saga, intrigues the scientific minds, and sparks new interest for a younger generation of Star Trek fans.
J.J. Abram’s rendition of Star Trek is the eleventh film based on the Star Trek franchise and features cameos by the main characters of the original Star Trek television series. The main actors in this Star Trek movie are new actors. The film features James T. Kirk (played by Chris Pine) and Spock (played by Zachary Quinto) as young men before their meeting on the USS Enterprise to do battle with Nero (played by Eric Bana). Viewers witness the main characters - Captain Kirk, Spock, Bones (played by Karl Urban) and all the others - in the early part of their lives as the Starship Enterprise takes its maiden voyage. The plot features a scenario of alternate reality through time travel by both Nero and the one and only Spock, played by Leonard Nimoy.
This unique version of the film builds upon the original’s history from Robert Wise’s pilot episode and creates a whole new future. This adds to the Star Trek mystique. Both old and new Trekkie fans can relate to all the old characters and their new looks. J.J. Abrams’s spin on the USS Enterprise and the fact that the new characters still have the jobs on the ship as in previous versions of the film allows older Trekkie fans to still relate to the characters. Trekkies from the past are able to remember why they fell in love with their favorite characters....
