Introduction

Dialogue in the Dark is an exhibit that offers those with vision the opportunity to experience what life is like for those who are vision impaired. The purpose of the Dialogue in the Dark is the “show society the beautiful world we see and to prove that we are also a part of a society who cannot see or hear.” (P’Bell) It was founded in 1988 by Andres Heinecke. Heinecke made it his life’s goal to teach those with sight about the difficulties that come with losing it. His inspiration for the exhibit stemmed from his experience with a blind coworker. He wanted to teach the world that the visions impaired are more capable than we can ever imagine. He does so by teaching tolerance, open dialogue, and respect through Dialogue in the Dark. Their mission statement is “to facilitate social inclusion of marginalized people on a global basis.” (Heinecke) They accomplish this by helping those with sight experience what it is like to live without sight.
