III. Educational and Occupational Background:

A. Education: James Madison graduated from what America calls Princeton today in 1771. He mastered Greek and Latin under private tutors; he completed his college studies in 2 years! But he stayed an extra year to target both Hebrew and philosophy.

B. Occupation: Politician, Planter

IV. Presidential Term: (1809-1817)

V. Issues of Election: Anti-Democratic-Republicans said that Madison was a quiet guy who was actually a Federalist and favored a strong central government. When congress announced the results of who had the most electoral votes it was James Madison by a surprising 122 votes, and the runner-up was Charles C. Pinckney who had 44 votes.

IX. Major domestic Happenings:

A. Louisiana Enters Union: After a rebellion by American Settlers in 1810, United States soldiers entered and took control. In 1812, Louisiana entered the Union as the 18th state.

B. War of 1812: The war of 1812 was fought between American and British forces. The British caused the war by several different reasons, including; trade restrictions, British helping Native Americans to not let America expand, and mainly the impressment of American Sailors.

C. Battle of New Orleans: The battle of New Orleans was the last major battle in the war of 1812. General Andrew Jackson defeated the British Army that tried to capture New Orleans.

D. Treat of Ghent: The treaty of Ghent brought peace to the United States and Great Britain in December 1814. Great Britain ratified the treaty a couple of days later while, while it took America to ratify it a couple of weeks (February) later due to the fact that communication was hard back then.
