3 main categories covered in a Sustainability Development Report

The most common ways for us to define Sustainable Business today is from “Our Common Future”, also known as the Brundtland Report. The report claims that sustainable business requires us to see the world as a whole, that all issues globally are inter-related and not independent. While all needs of today’s generation needs to be met, the future generation’s needs should not be disregarded.

(Shah, 2009).

Herewith, we will gain more insights into how Sanford Limited operates their business in a sustainable manner. First of all, the three main categories that ought to be covered in a Sustainability Development Report (SDR), as required from the New Zealand Business Council for Sustainable Development are economic, social and environment issues. (New Zealand Business Council for Sustainable Development, n.d).

For example on an Environmental sustainability point of view for Diesel consumption, Sanford uses Eco-efficiency diesel, their target of targeted 2% reduction in the number of liters of diesel used per kg of production set for year 2007 was achieved and yet again the target set for year 2008 at 2.5% in year 2007 was achieved once again, at 0.3251 liters used on per kg of production. Other measures taken by Sanford are environment initiatives taken such as eco-efficiencies water, electricity, coal, diesel as well as the utilization of greenhouse gas. Social sustainability is also an important part as the success of any organization is made up of the people factor. Apart from ensuring the safety, health, well-being of their staff, Sanford also ensures that their staff receives adequate training and certification.
