1. Analyze Bob using the Maslow need hierarchy?

Abraham Maslow developed a model in which basic low-level needs must be satisfied before higher-level needs are pursued. The model has five categories

• Physiological need-air, water and sleep

• Safety needs-safe place to live, job security and financial reserve

• Social needs-need for friends and to give and receive love

• Esteem needs-self-respect, recognition and achievement

• Self-actualization-wisdom, meaning, justice and truth

Bob is on the second lowest level of this model. Bob is concerned with job and financial security at this point in his life. Until he feels that he is obtaining job and financial security he will not move to the next level to social needs and be able to commit to his girlfriend to take the next step to settle down and get married.

2. Analyze Bob’s lack of motivation using organizational justice and expectancy theory.

Bob believes his generation got a bad deal and is frustrated, under organizational justice, “fairness or equity can be subjective, and it resides in the perception of the person.” (Robbins & Timothy, 2007)

Bob also believes with the current competition of jobs, combined pressures by business to keep costs down means a future with minimal salary increases, his mind is set that that no matter how hard he works, the likelihood of getting a good salary increases is minimal. Bob’s perception is unfair organization justice how much he gets paid, relative to what he thinks he should be paid.

3. If you were Bob’s boss, what could you do to positively influence his motivation?

The first thing I would do is get Bob involved with sharing a significant degree of decision-making power. This could increase his commitment to the company and give him a sense of job security.
