Observations:  Week 1

I use the process of unsystematic observation every day in my life. We may not be aware of this process, but it is utilized on an ongoing basis. I use it when I first meet a new person or go to an unfamiliar place. I am listening and paying close attention to my surroundings, interpreting the information that I receive from them in a series of unsystematic observations. I always tend to stand or sit with my back towards a wall. I am always paying close attention to the other person’s demeanor. We all use this type of observation process when we encounter unfamiliar situations. It is part of how we determine how we will respond in any circumstance.

I often used building theories in both my professional and my personal lives. I use this process when someone is acting in a way that seems to require analysis for a better understanding. I have to remind myself that their reaction and behavior may have to do with something that is outside of me and my behavior towards them. They may be having troubles at home or they may not be feeling well. I look at other sources of stress that may be affecting them. If I can determine a reasonable source for their stress, then I can be more compassionate in my own response to them and handle the situation more delicately. If they are willing to talk about their issue with me, then I can help defuse the situation for them and this may improve both their day and our other interactions.
