Personal Philosophy of Nursing 2
When faced with the challenge of defining my personal nursing philosophy, I took a look at how philosophy is defined. One definition, according to Thorndike Barnhart Dictionary (1997), is “the general principles of a particular subject or field.” I also reviewed major influences of philosophy history such as Socrates. The Socratic Method includes three self-explained phases: definition, analysis and synthesis. Paul and Elder recommend that “students should learn the discipline of Socratic questioning, so that they begin to use it in reasoning through complex issues, in understanding and assessing the thinking of others, and in determining the implications of what they and others think” (2007, p. 36). I found that I unintentionally went through this process as I developed my philosophy.
Nursing is a multifaceted field with vast scopes of practice, many avenues to choose from, and unlimited locations to practice. It would be quite accurate to assume that there will always be a need for nurses, therefore, a job. Besides being a relatively stable job market, it can also be very satisfying for the provider. New procedures and treatments related to technological developments and advancement in knowledge are intriguing to me. I like the thought of being able to make a difference and help someone in need. Nursing has been in my life from my first encounter with a stray dog with a limp leg that I splinted to working on my BSN. I have the desire to make nursing not just a job, but my profession.
The core of nursing should be focused on setting high standards of care that facilitate patient teaching, encouraging a healthy lifestyle for long-term quality of health, and continual quality improvement of policy and procedures. EBP (Evidence-Based Practice) is one current and popular method being used to achieve this goal.
