Alumina Inc., a four billion dollar aluminum maker located on Lake Dira, Erehwon within the United States. Alumina Inc. manufactures, alumina refining, aluminum smelting, bauxite mining, packing materials, and automotive components. The company has business dealings in eight countries while conducting 70% of the companies business within the United States. Alumina Inc. must follow strict Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) guidelines, due to the products the company produces. The company has maintained a good image of following EPA guidelines. However, five years ago the company experienced a violation. Alumina received a citation when a routine EPA compliance evaluation revealed, elevated levels of Polynuclear Aromatic Hydrocarbon (PAH) in test samples. The EPA mandated a clean-up of the site; Alumina quickly complied and completed the clean-up. An environmental report filed stated the violation had been corrected and Alumina good standing with the EPA resumed.
Kelly Bates, a local resident has attempted to destroy Alumina good name. Kelly Bates has alleged that her 10- year- old daughter developed leukemia as a result from the Alumina leak five years earlier. She alleges that contaminated water consumed by her daughter directly led to her daughter’s illness, an allegation that Alumina strongly denies. An independent site evaluation states that Alumina’s PAH levels are well below the prescribed limit. However, Kelly Bates has threatened to destroy Alumina’s image in the face of the people with a five million dollar personal injury lawsuit. The lawsuit is based solely on the EPA violation from five years ago.
