Dear local news station,
I write this letter to your news station in hopes that this will bring to light a problem in our community that most residents don’t know about, but that quite a few suffer from and don’t even know it. The slow leak of gas running through the old pipes in most of the homes in our community is causing illness to its residents. I hope that in reading this letter you will consider bringing this situation to the eyes of the public so that we can all get better and live safer.
During my research of an illness that I thought I only suffered from I found out that people that I interacted with everyday were suffering from the same symptoms that I was. I started suffering from gastrointestinal problems as soon as I moved into my new house. The one thing that this house has that no other of my previous homes had is a gas line. I was used to paying high electric bills for my dryer, water heater, and home heating. After a couple of my friends had heard what I was suffering from they told me they too had the same symptoms. We did a little digging and with my background in construction we found the only common link between us all was that our homes had gas lines and that they are all older homes from when codes were more relaxed and people just went by someone’s word that something was done right.
When our community was built the gas company decided to cut corners and there are no safety regulations to ensure that the company even attempt to maintain our community. The gas is leaking into the air and into the soil, which allows it to contaminate our drinking water as well. Most often a gas leak can be odorless and undetected but it can still cause health problems.
