Divorce

In working with a person that wants to pursue a divorce from her spouse I would want to thoroughly explore her decision. I would address with her all the aspects of her divorce, by having her write down the reasons she wants the divorce. Along with her reasoning for the divorce I would explore with her who will be affected by her decision. When it comes to talking about her children and her happiness, I would try and discern why she is not happy with her husband more in depth. I would also assist her in trying to make sure that her decision is the right one for her and her family. I would also make her aware that I would support her in her choice and assist her in processing the effects of her decision. Another way to work with this client would be to ask if she has tried marriage counseling or bring her husband in for a session. While divorce may be the answer for her it may have long term effects on the rest of the family.

As an individual that has gone through divorce with my parents when I was nine years old, it would be hard for me to work with someone wanting to a divorce without considering her children. I would need to be upfront with my client about my position on divorce; that I do understand divorce is needed at times and other times it is an answer rushed to quickly. Thus the reason I would explore with her the reasoning behind her decision. If I could not put aside my personal views I would consult a more experienced counselor (AACC 2004). Even though divorce may be hard to work with a client on I do believe there are times when a marriage is not working and both parties have tried their best to resolve issues, but were not successful.
