1: Individual Self-Assessment

This is my essay on my description of my own current knowledge and skills, practice, values, beliefs, career aspirations and self-awareness.

Current Knowledge

I have a vague knowledge of current contemporary issues. This includes the care home which has recently had to close due to health care staff abusing service users. The health care commission board has recently decided that the abuse is due to lack of staff training. Lack of government funding means that staff members are not being trained to deal with patients in the correct way. Another current issue is the NHS job cut-backs; this means that there are job freezes. My knowledge on this issue is very vague.

For my career I need to gain more academic learning and qualifications. I need to have certain skills that are essential for my career as a social worker. These skills include; excellent communication skills, basic IT knowledge, able to work well in a team and keeping calm under pressure. I need to have my social workers degree which is three years but before that I need; 5 GCSE’s A* - C including English and Maths and two relevant A-Levels.

The roles and responsibilities for my career are; my role will be, being part of as team and work together to improve individual’s lives. My responsibilities are to be able to complete tasks and cases myself and to be able to assess individuals’ clearly and correctly. The timescales for my career may vary but up to now they are; finishing my A levels in two years time, I am not sure whether I’m going to University or not yet.

Skills

The skills that I have are; I can keep calm under pressure, I have basic IT knowledge, I work well in a team and I have good communication skills. For my career I need to work on my confidence, first aid knowledge, I need to gain more work experience, the importance of confidentiality and a more advanced knowledge of what the job entails.
