People communicate consistently throughout their day using verbal, nonverbal, written, unwritten communication. Communication is defined as speech, signs, or writing exchanged in the form of information, thoughts or opinions (Dictionary.com, 2012). With demonstrative communication, there can be positives and negatives to how the sender and receiver understand the message(s). Demonstrative communication is nonverbal and unwritten communication such as facial expressions, body language, tone of voice and many other forms of expressions for the sender and receiver to interpret between one another (University of Phoenix, 2012, Course Syllabus).

Understanding a person’s body language is very important because this can give many different signs of positive and negative responses to a situation. According to Cheesbro, O’Connor and Rios (2010) “Before you even open your mouth, your facial expressions, your clothes, your walk, your body posture, your skin color, your hairstyle, etc. are communicating much about you” (Principles of Nonverbal Communication, Para. 3). For example, to make this an effective way to nonverbally communicate with a receiver, a customer can come into a clothing store and the first thing that the salesperson does is smile and then says welcome. This is positive and effective because the first thing that is noticed by the receiver is the smile which is an indication that the person entering the store is being noticed in a positive way and is given a feeling of comfort. A salesperson with a comforting attitude can lead to great sales, which could also lead to salesperson of the month or even a promotion (Cheesebro, O'Connor, & Rios, 2010). With a person’s body posture and facial expression, alone can be shown as negative as well, before the receiver is even able to receive the message that was meant to be given.
