Use of SPSS

What is SPSS?

SPSS is acronym of Statistical Package for Social Sciences. We use SPSS software for the analysis of data; therefore student should be aware of the SPSS in detail. Here we refer few commands which are very much necessary for the data analysis.

How to give input of the data in SPSS with the correct properties of the variables and position? The software SPSS is compatible with MS Word and MS Excel. We can share the data by using the commands of copy, past, export the database and other between SPSS and MS Word /MS Excel.

Most of the options in this menu work like MS word and excel. Student can learn himself/herself with little efforts.

The commands Undo, Redo, Cut, Copy, Past, replace, find etc will work like MS word and excel, while the commands of Insert variables, Insert cases, Go to case and Go to variable etc will have its own purpose related to the data bases. “Case” means particular data in a data file. Insert variable or case is use to place any particular variable or case in any particular position. The proper order as the order of the questionnaire will be helpful in minimization of the data feeding errors. Go to case or variable, will make the study of any particular case or variable easy with the help of go to command.

The view command is use to view the different view options like fonts, value labels and others. It’s a simple but very useful option which student can learn easily with little efforts.

From this point we find some special options require for the handling of a data base. Some options are very important to understand for example; Define variable properties, Copy data properties, identify duplicate cases, sort cases sort variables, transpose, merge file, Split file, Select cases etc.
