DATA ANALYSIS

TITLE: Cellular Respiration

AIM: To investigate the rate of oxygen uptake during respiration.

APPARATUS AND MATERIALS: Beakers, thermometer, stirrers, graduated cylinder, boiling tubes, stoppers, glass tube, absorbent cotton, teat droppers, masking tape, rods, stopwatch, beads, bunsen burner, kidney beans, (germinated and non-germinated), potassium hydroxide, Sudan III, and water.

DIAGRAM: DIAGRAM TO SHOW HOW APPARATUS WAS SET UP TO INVESTIGATE THE RATE OF OXYGEN UPTAKE DURING RESPIRATION.

PROCEDURE: 1) Two water baths were prepared, one at 25˚C and one at 10˚C.

2) The volume of fourteen germinating beans was found by filtering a 100ml graduated cylinder to 50ml and measuring the disposal water.

3) The cylinder was filled with 50ml of water, fourteen non-germinating beans and enough beads were added to attain the equal volume of germinating beans.

4) Step two (2) and three (3) were repeated.

5) Six respirometers were assembled by obtaining six (6) boiling tubes, each with an attached stopper and glass tube. The vials were labeled A, B and C.

6) A small wad of absorbent cotton was placed in the bottom of each tube and using a dropper, the cotton was saturated with fifteen percent (15%) potassium hydroxide (KOH).

7) A small wad of dry cotton was placed on the top of the saturated cotton.

8) The first set of germinating beans, non-germinating beans and beads, and beads were placed in the first three vials respectively. The stoppers and rod were inserted.

9) A sling mad of masking tape to each side of the water bath was made. An equilibrium period of seven to eight minutes was allowed.

10) Vials A1, B1 and C1 were submerged in the water baths at 25˚C. Vials A1, B1 and C1, were submerged in water baths at 10˚C.

11) After seven minutes, all setups were put entirely in water. The initial position of the water level was recorded.

12) A drop of Sudan III was placed at the tip of the tube and the movement of the indicator along the tube was...
