Assignment 1 : 5-Minute Speech

(Individual Assignment)

Task

You are required to deliver a 5-minute speech on any topic of your choice.

The purpose of your speech should be either to inform, to persuade or to motivate the audience. Your speech should contain an introduction, 3 main points with supporting details,

and a conclusion.

Objective of Assignment

The objective of this assignment is to enable students to put into practice what they have learnt about public speaking (in Lecture 3, 4 and 5) and to develop their confidence speaking in front of an audience.

Instructions to Students

• Start to prepare your speech by selecting a topic. Take into consideration all the important characteristics of selecting a topic (based on what you have learnt in Lecture 3).

• Be clear about the purpose of your speech.

• You are required to submit your topic to your class rep, who will then compile a list of all the students’ topics for the Tutor on Week 5.

• Give your speech an interesting title.

• Organise the contents of your speech in a systematic manner (based on what you have learnt in Lecture 4).

• You will be presenting your speech in your Tutorial class starting from Week 6.

• During your presentation, establish good eye contact with your audience. Do not read from a text or script. Take into consideration all the important aspects in public speaking presentations (based on what you have learnt in Lecture 5).
