People will be motivated to behave in particular ways if they believe that doing so will bring them rewards they value and find attractive.

1. Effort – Performance Relationship.

* An individual must believe that exerting effort will lead desired to performance.

* “If I give a maximum effort, will it be recognized in my performance appraisal?”

* Can be influenced by appraisal system of organization, past experience, self confidence and types of skills needed for the task.

Red Dawson:

Coach Red Dawson’s performance appraisal is based on both the community’s perception of how their rebuilding the football program and his own with how they’re honoring the memory of those who perished in the plane crash. Due to the tragedy, Dawson finds it extremely hard to be around the game which initially affects his willingness and motivation to rejoin the team. There is a huge hole in the program, school and community and he wants to try to help fill it. The roadblocks in the way such as the lack of talent on the team and the burden of the tragedy have made Dawson reluctant to rejoin the coaching staff. Dawson is afraid that these factors will negate the effort he puts in and affect his performance appraisals he receives from the community and himself.

Interim President Dedmon:

Comes off as timid and insecure which isn’t too surprising considering the circumstance he is in. Dedmon’s confidence is shaken because of his lack of experience and resources at his disposal to help build the football program. Furthermore, there are many of those in the community opposed to fielding a team which makes him second guess his decision. Though he wants to rebuild the program, Dedmon fears the possibility of failure when completing certain tasks to achieve the goal. Similar to Coach Dawson, Dedmon is uncertain whether the effort he will put in will lead to his to a positive appraisal from both the community and him personally.
