In which ways does an organisational culture – and its embedding in a national culture – influences the management and organisation practice of business. Here you are required to analyse, discuss and critique the complex phenomenon of organisational culture and its impact. You may also consider your own experiences with cultural dimensions at your University and in New Zealand.
Introduction:
This essay tries to define and explore a few key aspects of organisational culture once it has been embedded into a national culture. Different perceptions of organisational culture are discussed, analyzed and critiqued along with its dimensions. Keeping focus on the prevalent work culture in New Zealand, observations made with regards to the impact of organisational culture on performance, job satisfaction as well as employee commitment are put forth. Sensitive issues such as racial discrimination as well as the global recession caused by strong organisational cultures are also looked upon in this essay. The essay also tries to affirm the concept of achieving higher productivity in an organisation by implementation of appropriate or “best fit” organisational cultures. Here an effort is made to understand the impact organisational culture can have on different management processes and practices. Through a few examples, it has been tried to establish that no matter how ‘strong’ or ‘weak’ an organisational culture is, it not only influences but also contributes towards the achievement of common organisational goals.
Hofstede (1980), explains that culture is a result of common or collective thinking patterns of individuals by means of which they differentiate their identities from various other groups.
