Introduction

In this essay I will critically discuss the use of assessment measures in the selection of a candidate to fill a vacancy for an accountant.

I will discuss five core competencies which, in my opinion, will accompany the role of an accountant. I will also explain how I will approach the process to appoint a suitable candidate. Lastly I will explain the role of situational, personality and interest measures in the process and indicate how I will go about choosing suitable instruments for the selection process.

Five core competencies

In the world of work, job descriptions are increasingly formulated in terms of generic competencies. According to Tutorial Letter 101 for PYC4807 (2011) competencies can be defined as behaviours or related behaviours of a person, arising from underlying aspects of the individual, which are determinants of job success. The underlying aspects include knowledge, values, motives and personality. Competencies are very useful to give a clear set of dimensions against which performance can be described and measured.

From a list of generic competencies, I have chosen the following five which, according to me, best suit the role of an accountant. The first competency is conceptualisation. According to Tutorial Letter 101 for PYC4807 (2011) this competency refers to the ability to see relationships between parts and to anticipate the end result. It can also be seen as non-verbal reasoning. An accountant have the ability to see the bigger picture and also be able to reason in a non-verbal way as they work with numbers etc.
