Abstract

Throughout the years, many negative impacts of video gaming have been canvassed to the American public’s attention concerning young players. While many opinions lead to the belief that there are only negative impacts, my research results show there are quite a bit of positive impacts as well. During this review of sources, some of these negatives and positives will be defined as well as project a weighted measure of the two. This paper outlines positive and negative effects of gaming amongst children and provides a way to balance the two in order to come to a better conclusion to the benefits and the downfalls that gaming has on children.

I find it interesting to note how many articles and books have been written concerning video gaming amongst our children. Nine times out of ten, I recollect the findings to be of a negative impact however, I have taken notice to a few positive impacts. Some of the positives, I have noticed on a personal level with my own children. None the less, a large portion of me wonders why this is the case. I believe many can argue that while the impacts of extensive gaming are far more on the negative side, more positive impacts should get the same meaningful attention. The reason I make mention of this is due to many stories and experiences I have learned of from a numerous amount of other parents. At the same time, it seems as though televised media sells negatives more fashionably than positives for any topic, which, may have more of a thumbprint on American viewers than articles and books have on American readers.
