For this assignment I have been asked to critically explore the distinction between ‘training’ and ‘learning’ in an organisation context.

When we are born we embark on a learning adventure, constantly learning new things in order to survive in todays world. From an early age we start learning to walk and talk before we even begin to enter education where we are taught to read, right and count. Through out our education we obtain qualifications to help us grow into educated human beings.

“Training can be understood as planned, structured and often formalized learning experiences that seek to develop specific skills and knowledge needed for effective job performance. Historically, employees have learnt many of the competences they need to perform effectively by being trained” (Banfield & kay, 2008, p.372).

“Learning a fundamental and natural human process involving growth and change. Learning is about behavioral modification. It can not be seen, but is inferred from differences in what we know, believe and can do. Learning is the way in which we can improve and be different from that which we were. Learning needs to be understood as both a process and a outcome” (Banfield & kay, 2008, p.371).

Training is used in organisations to help employees develop new skills, keep them up to date with any new process or techniques in the organisation and help them recap on what they already know so they can perform at there best. I currently work part time as a sales assistant for an organisation called Adidas Originals, they require us to take part in some sort of training by a manger at least once a week. This can be anything from health and safety training, customer service training to conflict management training. They do this so we are able to handle any situations that arise in the store and to keep us aware of what we are expected to do so we perform at are best.
