Abstract In recent years, climate change has made environmental protection a crucial topic. It triggers the rise of temperature and the sea level, resulting in a pronounced change in climate. Climate change is a serious threat to human life. CO2 emissions rank among the main culprits behind global warming. At present, road transport accounts for 74% of total transport CO2 emissions. For this reason, the use of alternative fuels has become a pressing issue, and a significant number of automakers and scholars have devoted themselves to the study and subsequent development of alternative fuel vehicles (AFVs). Evaluating AFVs should consider not only the reduction of air pollution and fuel efficiency, but also the sustainability of alternative fuel vehicles. However, existing studies have merely emphasized AFV characteristics rather than evaluating AFVs using the perspective of sustainable development (SD).
