I was in Mrs. Jones third grade military style class at Canal Elementary in Jeanerette, La. The desks were lined up in a straight row and the floors shined as if were waxed daily. One day our teacher had to step out of class for an emergency phone call. She told the class to be quiet and remain in their seats. I raised my hand before the office intercom buzzed the classroom. She ignored my hand and ran down the hall.

So I’m sitting in class and the students were misbehaving and making silly gestures. The class was laughing and I thought I was going to let it go at that point but I held on longer. While leaving the office, she heard the students chattering all the way down the hall. She was furious and scolded the class for their loud outburst. I raised my hand again, she said, “Put your hand down.” I tried to hold it so I raise my hand again, she said, “What do you want?” I said, I need to use the restroom.” She said, “Girl, just go and hurry.” So I ran, but I peed on myself once I opened the bathroom door. I stayed in the restroom so long that my teacher came too look for me. When she heard me crying, she asked, what’s wrong? I said, “I couldn’t make it to the toilet. I was so embarrassed that I didn’t want to come out bathroom. She went to the office to call my mom.

Once I changed my clothes I walked straight too my mom car. My mom spoke with Mrs. Jones about the incident, saying that she could have reacted to my hand in the air sooner and this accident wouldn’t happen. The next day Mrs. Jones apologized for ignoring me and gave me a hug.
