Introduction

The Mayan civilization was probably the most highly advanced society during 200-900 C.E. They had an extraordinary civilization being that they were rich in culture and had high intellects. The Mayan calendar, which is very complex and accurate, shows how intelligent the Mayans were. The mystery of the Mayans is where did they go? How does a whole civilization that once had millions in population and is this advanced just disappear? There are many theory's that people have spent countless hours and days trying to solve this mystery. Theories that include, the ecological theory, that claims the civilization collapsed because of natural causes; and the second theory which is the non-ecological theory, that claims the civilization collapsed because of human causes.

Some believe that the civilization collapse could be due to natural causes, which include climate change, epidemic disease, environmental disasters. Climate change could be the droughts that plagued the Mayans over a period of time. "Maya Population decrease surely involved people dying of starvation or thirst, or killing each other in struggles over increasingly scarce resources." (Diamond p. 175). You would also take into effect with all the starvation and people dying that this would also decrease the birthrate and cause the rate of survival for a child to diminish over the decades. A drought could have caused there to be few areas with reliable water supplies that could accommodate a population of their size. I know in human nature, you would move to a location that would allow you to survive. It is possible that many became refugees and immigrated to other civilizations.

Archaeologists believed for a long time that the Mayans were a gentle and peaceful civilization. "We now know that Maya warfare was intense, chronic, and unresolvable, because limitations of food supply and transportation" (Diamond p. 172).
