Abstract

Critical Discourse Analysis (hereafter CDA), a proper instrument employed to identify and analyze ideological assumptions well disguised in the discourse, is often applied to study news or public speeches. This research adopts it to reveal the political bias hidden in a film review. The grand film The Flowers of War by Zhang Yimou, received distinctive remarks between Chinese media and American official media like The New York Times. The American official media also reacted differently in blogs, Facebook or other grassroots media for common people. This thesis aims to find out the reasons for different media reactions and to investigate whether this film review in The New York Times is free of political influence. Using the three-dimensional framework proposed by Fairclough and Halliday’s systematic functional linguistics, this thesis brings to surface the hidden ideology control naturally woven in this film review. In discussion, the stage of description, which is the focus of the study, emphasizes on linguistic feature like lexical choice and transitivity. At the stage of interpretation, the text is seen as the process of the production and the film review is interpreted to reveal the code of hidden political bias. And at the stage of explanation, the social text is taken into account to reveal the political control. Thus, an implication that ideology has great influences over discourses can be drawn.
