BIOL230W - Scientific Literature Homework

Weeks 12 (3 points) & 13 (17 points)

Read the assignment carefully, your total score (out of 20 pts) will be determined on how well you communicate your understanding of the assignment. This is an important aspect of the Scientific Literature portion of the course. Give the assignment your full attention and remember, as with all expository writing, the burden is on you to convince the grader that you understand the assignment. See the attached rubric for how you will be graded.

This is a two week assignment that will be different than what you have done before. Below is a list of diseases whose cause can be attributed to defects in cellular transport. Choose one and search for a paper published (not posted online, but published) within the last 10 years.  You may also use a disease NOT found on the list. You must use GoogleScholar.com or Pubmed.com because these search tools only present published papers and it includes a link to the article (note, for many journals you must be logged into a Penn State portal for access). GoogleScholar also has the ability to filter out papers older than 10 years. The first paper you look at may not be the most appropriate, so be prepared to do a bit of searching. Spend the first week locating a suitable paper.

Cut and paste the citation and ABSTRACT only of the paper you are considering into the Scientific Literature Homework Dropbox – Week 12. Do not upload as a Word document. Choose your paper wisely (read what is expected for next week). You will not be allowed to change papers once the deadline has passed. This assignment is designed to ensure you choose an appropriate article for the next week. If you fail to submit a paper by the deadline, you will receive zero points for Week 12.
