The death penalty should be abolished.  It is inhumane and is ‘cruel and unusual' punishment.  Imprisonment is the appropriate punishment for murder.  Every execution risks killing an innocent person.

Conservative

The death penalty is a punishment that fits the crime of murder; it is neither ‘cruel' nor ‘unusual.'  Executing a murderer is the appropriate punishment for taking an innocent life.

Parts of New Labour's political philosophy linked crime with social exclusion and pursued policies to encourage partnerships between social and police authorities to lower crime rates. Other areas of New Labour's policy maintained a traditional approach to crime; the prison population in 2005 rose to over 76,000, mostly owing to the increasing length of sentences. Following the September 11 attacks, the Labour government attempted to emphasise counter-terrorism measures. From 2002, the government followed policies aimed at reducing anti-social behaviour;[65]in the 1998 Crime and Disorder Act, Labour introduced Anti-Social Behaviour Orders (ASBOs).[66]

Crime is one of the biggest issues facing the country. There is far too much of it, especially violent crime. Too many people don’t feel safe in their own homes, on their own streets and in their town centres. Liberal Democrats want to cut crime to make you safer.

For too long the debate about policing and criminal justice policy has been centred on what sounds tough rather than what works to cut crime. Labour and the Tories have become embroiled in a sentencing arms race in a bid to pander to tabloid newspaper editors and to exploit a politics of fear.
