Tell-Tale Heart

In the story titled Tell- Tale Heart by famous writer Edgar Allen Poe was found in Backpack Literature on page 41 had two main characters one was the younger man better known as the killer or assassin and the old man with the glass eye. Later into the story police officers come into play but they wouldn’t be classified as main characters due to the time of their appearance in the story. In pertaining to the plotting of the short story it had a sequence of events, which will be stated in order of occurring events.

First the younger man stated his reasoning for his actions stating that “wherever it fell upon me, my blood ran cold and so by degree – very gradually – I made up my mind to take the life of the old man, and thus rid myself of the eye forever.” See this old man was a cool old man, never harmed him never said any harsh words to the assassin, it was just this vulture, pale blue eye with film over it that haunted the killers soul. Followed by that was the plotting of the killer, followed with stalking of the old man for eight night watching him rest planning the execution to the T. Labeling the eye an “Evil Eye” he went for the kill on the eighth night. “The old mans hour had come! With a loud yell, I threw open the lantern and leaped into the room. He shrieked once – once only. In a instant I dragged him to the floor, and pulled the heavy bed over him. I then smiled gaily to find the deed so far done.” Excited about the bad deed to someone that seen him as a friend showed disloyalty and dishonesty.

“Yes, he was stone, stone dead. I placed my hand upon the heart and held it there many minutes.” After the man was pronounced dead the killer wasn’t quite done yet, he still had to slice him up and dispose the body parts. Cutting off the old mans head, arms, and legs, and placing them under the floor the job was completed.
