The Birt database is an open source; eclipse based reporting system that integrates with your Java/J2EE application to produce compelling reports. The system is focused on business intelligence, it provides core reporting features such as report layout, data access and scripting. Birt reports allow for several components including lists, charts cross tabs, letters and documents and compound reports. The system consists of 4 main parts data, data transforms, business logic and presentation. The chart engine within Birt can also be used by itself allowing the business to add charts to their application.
The Birt database consists of two major components, the report designer and the report server. When they are combined it allows the user to create graphically rich reports that can be deployed for a central web server into a standard internet browser. A person with limited working knowledge of the database against which they want to report can write reports that contain lists and graphs and that can allow the user to filter the data by any columns that the report author allows. These reports can be hosted on a central server in a business intranet or even on a publically available web server and be viewed by anyone who had a copy of internet explorer.
The BIRT database enhances usability, functionality and appeal of a business by adding flash based charting, dynamic dashboard, interactive viewing, customizable data, visualization apps and a robust server which lets the business secure, deploy and scale to millions of users from a single design.
