Plagiarism is a problem in many fields of work and expertise. No where bigger is the problem than in the academic world. With technological advances such as the Worldwide Web, it has become increasingly easier to access writings and works about any topic. The problem is students are not properly using the writings of others inside of their own paper. A vast majority of students are replacing their own ideas with other people’s work. Some may buy them online, from another student at the school, or just have a friend or family member do the work for them. Plagiarism can be intentional or unintentional with potentially serious consequences but it can be prevented. Are you a plagiarist?

According to the Oxford English Dictionary (2007) a plagiarist is “   A person who plagiarizes the work, ideas, etc., of another.” Students may plagiarize for a couple of reasons either intentionally or unintentionally.  What may cause a student to plagiarize intentionally is being in a hurry on a particular paper.  They are rushing to complete it and do not take the time to summarize the material they have read and or properly credit the sources that they used.  Unintentional plagiarism can be caused a couple of different ways. One being when someone is writing a paper, they happen to remember something about the subject, and add it in to the paper. Unfortunately, the source is still not properly credited. This is also difficult plagiarism to prevent as the author is unaware of his sources. The best prevention to this type of plagiarism is diligent preparation. When sources are continually documented throughout preparation this type of plagiarism can be avoided. Unintentional plagiarism would be most likely to occur due to a lack of understanding...
